New report from ABBBA – Biofuels: What if the Global South set the rules? – African farmers’ and producers' views on sustainability requirements
How can the transition from fossil to renewable fuels be carried out in the best way? What would the EU sustainability requirements look like if designed by those directly concerned in Africa, rather than through decision-making in Brussels?
These are the main topics in the new report from Global Challenge’s project ABBBA – African Biofuel & Bioenergy Business Assessment, launched on a seminar at Sida (the Swedish Development Agency), Friday 14 March. The report draws on opinions from hundreds of organizations and individuals, both farmers and their representatives as well as producers, industry representatives and the indigenous population; environmental-, humanitarian and religious organizations, as well as policy makers and the media, from the UN Global Climate Summit to the cane growing areas and slaughterhouses that produce biogas. The report focuses on Africa, where a majority of the world’s poor live. The conversion to biofuels is often described as a game of “good and evil” taking place in Africa. Another report presented at the same seminar, published by the Swedish Green Motorist, examines Brazilian actors’ views on the EU’s Renewable Directive.
One of the crucial issues for the new European Parliament and the European Commission, which take office in May, is how the EU sustainability criteria should be revised. The question is therefore highly topical – and this study is the first one to presents the views of African actors.
The main author of the report is Mattias Goldmann, who can be reached on mattias.goldmann@fores.se, or +46703-309 00 45. The study will be revised based on the feedback after the first launch, in line with ABBBA’s open approach.
