World Economic Forum in Davos:Global Utmaning and Investor present The Nordic Way
On January 25 to 30 leading politicians and industry representatives meet for the annual World Economic Forum in Davos. This year’s theme of the meeting is “Shared norms for The New Reality”, and special interest is paid to how the Nordic countries handled the financial crisis and created sustainable economic growth.
For this reason, Global Challenge and Investor have in cooperation with the Nordic Council of Ministers and the Nordic Association produced the publication”The Nordic Way” In the publication’s first part Klas Eklund, a professor in Lund, Senior Economist at SEB and advisor to Global Challenge, explains how the Nordic countries – in an international comparison – have fared well through the recent financial crisis. Eklund will discuss to what extent the Nordic crisis experience can be used by others.

Strong state and strong individuals
But the Swedish crisis management is only part of the explanation of “the Nordic way”. In the second part of the report the myth of the Nordic countries as a compromise between socialism and capitalism is punctured. Henrik Berggren, historian and former editorial writer at Dagens Nyheter, describes together with Lars Trägårdh historian and professor at the University Ersta Sköndal, how a strong state instead made a strong individualism possible, and how social security has increased the acceptance of change. The authors’ conclusion is that the Nordic Capitalism shows how a well functioning state could actually strengthen the market economy.
