Preparatory G8 summit in Marseilles:"Circular migration is important for development around the Mediterranean"
The rapid change in Northern Africa and the Middle East offers new opportunities for development and integration in the region around the Mediterranean. And circular migration is one of several important features of the region’s development. That was part of the conclusions reached at the preparatory G8 meeting in Marseille in which Global Challenge appeared on 6-7 June.
The meeting Transformation and Integration into the Broads MENA Region was part of preparations for a forthcoming meeting with the heads of the G8 and the countries of the Mediterranean and the Middle East to be held in Kuwait on 21-22 November. Hosts were the World Bank’s Centre for Mediterranean integration in Marseilles, led by the Global Challenge senior adviser Mats Karlsson.
Civil society perspectives
Participants at the meeting were representatives of civil society: academics, activists who work against corruption and for women’s rights, environmental groups and entrepreneurs. Lisa Pelling, Global Challenge migration expert, was invited to lead a seminar on circular migration and development, and to help the meeting to agree that conclusions on these issues.
The meeting agreed on a final document with a more than 30 concrete proposals for greater independence and the emancipation of young people and women. Local development and increased innovation and entrepreneurial power, and the importance of encouraging circular migration as part of the development of the region.
