Heated debate at F4D Workshop in Nairobi
What is sustainable forestry, and how do we combine saving the forests of East Africa with increased job creation and food security? These were some of the questions posed at Global Challenge’s workshop in Nairobi on November 15th.
Participating in the workshop were Kenyan environment and farmers’ organizations, bio fuel companies, government agencies and research institutes, adding up to a total of some 30 invited participants. The aim was to gather input to the Forestry for Development project, whose pilot study is due to be presented in the spring.
“I’m very pleased, in particular with the in-depth discussions on sustainability requirements for bio energy and with the four case studies that were presented to us,” says F4D’s project manager Mattias Goldmann, himself a resident of Nairobi until the beginning of this year.
Great dedication
The most heated discussion involved a number of environment organizations accusing the government authorities of failing in their task to protect the Kenyan forests. Most tearful was the commemoration of Wangari Maathai, a Kenyan environment activist and Nobel Peace Prize laureate who died earlier this fall.

Next up for the F4D project are a number of field visits, meetings with similar organizations in Tanzania and active participation during the climate negotiations in Durban.
